My Story of Dealing With Tinnitus

This site is about my personal journey with tinnitus, how I got it, the pain and suffering I went through initially after I got the ringing in my ears from a loud explosion in Sri Lanka in 1992 and how I now deal with it happily.

I’ve written this site as after 14 years of having extreme tinnitus I didn’t think there was enough good information out there for people who have this intolerable ringing in their ears and ways to reduce the sound..

Or at least information written by someone who has extreme tinnitus and can offer ways to deal with it from a personal perspective. Please be strong as there is hope of a total cure for tinnitus in the coming years.

My Personal Tinnitus Story - “How It Happened” - Asia 1992 - Festival in Sri Lanka. Boy throws huge firecracker which landed next to my head and blew my eardrum causing an extremely loud and constant ringing in my ears (Tinnitus) which I’ve now had for 14 years.

Very few people aside from my close friends even know I have Extreme Tinnitus because quite frankly most people who don’t have it don’t understand it. The explosion that happened in 1992 changed my life irrevocably for the worse initially and later for the better when I came to grips with it.

In fact I doubt I’d have the wonderful life I now have if the accident had not happened.

photo12.jpgI am lucky enough to live in a rainforest jungle in Byron Bay in Australia (seriously) and the noise outside my house is a cacaphony of cicadas, crickets, dozens of birds and ocean waves crashing in all day and night. I actually moved here because of my tinnitus in order to mask the sounds ….and it works like a dream. The important thing to remember is that even though I was close to total despair after a few years of living with Tinnitus I came to grips with it and turned the extraordinarily loud ringing in my ears into positive in my life.

I am currently the CEO of 2 successful businesses - One a ‘For Profit and the other a Non Profit or Social Business NGO’

My commercial business is called OutsourcingTo.uS and provides online marketing services for 100’s of clients in Australia and worldwide. My non profit foundation is called OrphanIT.org and it is a multi award winning international NGO which provides sustainable solutions to other non profit (primarily telecentres) worldwide.

Our NGO has raised and implemented programs that have assisted several thousand youth in developing nations helping them achieve a better standard of living for themselves and their families. We’ve been reviewed in the Harvard Business Review, won international awards like the GKP Youth Awards, the Stockholm Challenge and The Global Junior Challenge which resulted in a scholarship to Santa Clara and Stanford Universities in the USA.

Cognitive Therapy for Insomnia Helps by Shedding New Light on Misconceptions

Cognitive therapy for insomnia helps in improving sleeping habits and also limits the time spent in bed as it involves making patients better informed regarding what sleep really is. It is a fact that many people actually have misconceptions about what sleep is which cognitive therapy for insomnia will help remove while also treating the condition. A common misconception is in believing that it is necessary to sleep during the day or take naps in case a person has not slept at night.

A Child’s Sleep Disorder Can Have Many Names

There are several different ways that a child sleep disorder can reveal itself. Children have a natural fear of the dark which can manifest itself into much more. Do you remember jumping from your darkened bedroom door into your bed because you didn’t know what was going to come out under the bed? Let’s admit it, we all had those fears.

Children will have nightmares about monsters and dragons and an even greater fear of the dark with the anxiety of what might happen if they fall asleep. These Sleep Terrors might include a child waking and screaming in the middle of the night frightened by a dream that they cannot even remember. This disorder can also turn into bedwetting. The fear of the dark is the key to this child sleep disorder. Nevertheless, all children’s sleep disorders should be taken very seriously.

Sleep Walking

Sleep walking is another very common child sleep disorder. Walking and talking with wide open eyes while sleeping is very strange, but a natural and harmless occurrence during a young child’s life. A parent only needs to provide a safe environment for this disorder. Not knowing when your child is going to get up in the middle of the night and wander through the house can be very unsettling, but if you provide a safe area for them to wander your anxiety can be eliminated in this disorder. Grinding and gnashing of the teeth while asleep is another annoying, but very common child sleep disorder. This disorder is visibly and audibly disturbing, but again it is very harmless and most probably just lead to dental problems.

There are many children who like to bang or roll their heads when trying to get to sleep. This is very normal, but again most annoying. This disorder again is harmless and a child sleep disorder that they will eventually outgrow. This disorder is harmless because if they child hits his head hard enough to hurt, then he will stop banging his head.

A disorder to watch carefully is sleep apnea. This child sleep disorder happens when the child stops and starts breathing again many times during the night. The symptoms for this disorder include loud snoring and complaining of morning headaches. There might also be frequent upper airway infections associated with this child sleep disorder.

A child’s sleep disorder is a problem that affects the entire family. Understanding the disorders and learning how to cope with them is something each family should do. There are many centers and organizations that are available to families to help them understand these disorders.

A Sign of Distress—Determining the Causes of Insomnia

Insomnia is a fairly common medical condition, and doctors are just beginning to get the hang of treating it. The key to treating insomnia in most cases is to determine the cause of the insomnia. Oftentimes, this is more difficult than it sounds. Yet, being aware of the risk factors and potential causes of insomnia could help you to treat your own case of the disorder.

Risk Factors Add to the Causes of Insomnia

There are certain characteristics that make a person more likely to experience insomnia. For example, females, the elderly, and people who suffer from depression are all much more likely to get insomnia than other groups. When conditions such as anxiety, stress, use of medications, or a medical problem occur, then these might cause someone to become more susceptible to the disorder as well.

Different Causes of Insomnia - Different Lengths of Time

One of the ways to classify insomnia is by how long it lasts. Transient insomnia is short term, intermittent insomnia occurs on and off, and chronic insomnia is long term. Each of these variations is caused by different factors. Transient and intermittent insomnia are frequently caused by one or more of the following factors: extreme temperatures, stress, change in surrounding environment, noise, jet lag or other schedule disruptions, and medication side effects.

Causes of chronic insomnia are different and are usually more difficult to pinpoint. Typically, chronic insomnia is caused by an underlying mental, emotional, or physical disorder. Depression, kidney disease, arthritis, sleep apnea, heart conditions, asthma, restless leg syndrome, hyperthyroidism, Parkinson’s Disease, and narcolepsy are all potential underlying causes of chronic insomnia.

However, chronic insomnia can also be caused by behavioral factors. For example, substance abuse, such as the misuse of caffeine or alcohol, can lead to chronic insomnia. Other behavioral factors include: excessive napping, smoking cigarettes, disrupted sleeping habits, and prolonged anxiety over lack of sleep.

Looking at the causes of insomnia can help to determine what the best method of treatment might be. Frequently, you can solve your insomnia problems simply by removing the cause. This typically means ending a behavior that might be causing the condition.
